Art Studio Camp at cMoe

We are having quite the busy summer here at cMoe - please forgive us for neglecting our blog! As you may know, cMoe hosts full-day camps throughout the summer for ages 5-13, in addition to mini-camps for ages 3-6. This week, we are in the midst of "Art Studio" camp. From ceramics projects to mask making, and exploding paint to spin art, we've been making messes and having fun! Check out some of our activities from the past week:

Ceramics with visiting artist Lisa Heichelbech

Lisa, a former cMoe artist-in-residence, showed our campers how to work with clay to create "creature cups."

If you'd like to learn more about Lisa's work, check out her Facebook page: Bonfire Pottery

Aluminum Foil Art with visiting artist Allison Dillingham

Allison, cMoe's Guest Services Manager, was kind enough to donate some time to helping our campers learn a fun art project. First, the campers sketched a picture, then counselors outlined it in hot glue. When the glue was dry, the art was covered with aluminum foil, and campers colored them in with permanent marker. As you can see, the results were just beautiful!

Tissue Paper Collages and Masks with visiting artist Samantha Weaver

Wednesday and Thursday, visiting artist Samantha Weaver, another one of cMoe's former artists-in-residence, taught the campers about tissue paper collages. We looked at pictures of Eric Carle books for inspiration. The results were so wonderful!

The next day: Mask Making

Thank you, Sam, for working with our campers on these great projects! For more info about Sam and her work, check out her website!

Exploding Paint Bags
In the above group picture, you might notice our beautiful abstract artwork behind the campers. We created this with "exploding" paint bags. To create it, we mixed food coloring and baking soda in gallon size bags. We just used primary colors so we could also explore color mixing. For a canvas, we laid out four pieces of poster board. We poured vinegar into the bags and quickly sealed them, and waited for the explosion. The results were disappointed at first - the bags popped open at the seal, causing the liquid to just sit there rather than explode out. After a couple of tries, a camper had the brilliant idea to just sprinkle the baking soda on the canvas and pour vinegar on it. We did, and the results were so fun and colorful!

We've done many more projects this week, bu that's probably enough for one blog post! We've had such fun creating art this week. Be sure to check out www.cmoekids.org for more info about our upcoming camps.
